Ventura County Stage Race – wrap-up
Posted on May 19, 2009
What a weekend…. all I can say.
Left San Diego all happy, ready to tackle the “flat” stage race and really looking forward to just racking up the upgrade points barrel. I was certain I would crack top 10. Have been riding pretty good – on flats at least.
Got into to town and saw dudes flying down this street…. hmmm…. if they are coming down, there must be a way up. Sure enough, TT course had a bit of climbing. I would consider it a lot of climbing for how short it was. I faired OK. Could have gone faster, but meh.
Crit was a disaster. Got pulled with 9 minutes to go. Brutal course. Can’t really compare it to anything else out there. Maybe Aliso Viejo brutal. Not quite as long, but that steep and with no ability to carry any speed into the hill as you are already coming up a 2-3% grade.
Road Race. Pre-drove the course and right there and then i knew I would be in for some serious problems. I drove backwards and I hit the feed zone climb and I was worried about that… 2 miles up the road i came up on the ACTUAL climb. Jeeez. A monster. People said it was no problem, blah, blah, blah. Bullshit. It was long and steep enough to really hurt. The issue that i had with it was the amount of recovery for hitting it again. That climb on a 10 mile course would have been fine, but on a 5.5 mile course was just to brutal… too much going on. Barely any place to eat or drink, always going up or down.
Overall it was a great weekend and for all these SHITHEADS that complain about the race, go help out instead. You know who you are you douchebag.
The promoter did a great job and I hope it comes back next year.
Now it is back to training…. harder
Next up is Bakersfield. I REALLY hope I break the 180lbs mark. SO CLOSE. You guys are dead once that happens.
