Tucson Bicycle Classic – TT
Posted on March 29, 2008
Left San Diego nice and early just to make sure I had some free time out here.
I drove my GFs Prius and I was addicted to the MPG tracker, so the driving speed was dictated by that guage.
Anyways, we make good time but the construction that they have over here completely screwed everything up. All of the sudden I had 20 more miles to go and I had planned 1 hour warm-up. I got to the course, jumped into my outfit and went to the line just to discover that they do not change the time in AZ. So I was good with time… great…
Talked to people and the consensus was that the TT was very manageable and the tailwind made it pretty fast.
I go off and I save up energy on the downhill. First thing I notice is the wind shift
From the time the masters went to the time I went, the wind had shifted.
Oh well, I am still clipping along pretty good on the slight downhill. 1 mile into it the guy that strated behind me catches me. Crap, that was really fast. I try to at least stay with him and I kinda do. He is on a full TT rig and I am on my regular bike.
We hit the uphill part of the TT and it was harder than I thought it would be. Headwind was pretty bad too. Ai, ai, ai, here we go… I start to suffer but I notice that the guy is not pulling away from me.
I see that we are getting close to the end so on the last hill I try to sprint it out. My chain DROPS!!!!!!!!!!! I get it back on and manage to get across the line.
IT HURT. It hurt a lot. The TT was 3.2 miles long and it took me 9:08 to finish it. The guy that passed me ended up winning with a time of 8:12, which was ridiculously fast out here. There are 2 other guys with 50 and 40 seconds on me, but the rest of the gang is pretty close to each other. I am sitting 20th (mid way) with about 15 guys 15 seconds apart. It is a good spot.
Today should change things a little bit though, we will see.
BTW, the best number yesterday was 45mpg, driving at 77mph average. I have spent $28 in gas to get over here.

I might have to trade in my Audi for a Prius!
