Thoughts on racing and the economic times

Posted on February 1, 2009

I have to say that after yesterday’ race I will have to pick and choose my races carefully.

With my boss cutting my bonuses (aka my fun money) I will not have enough money to race all season long. I race because I like to, since it is an entertainment expense for me, those are usually the first ones to get cut on my budget. It actually kinda sucks to think about it. I will be able to ride and all cause I have all my gear, but going to races every weekend, that most likely will not happen.

I figured I spent about 4k – 5k racing last year… maybe more. Thats without gear and equipment.

I certainly cannot take money from other things and dump it into cycling, doesn’t make sense to me. Retirement is one of them, food, shelter, car, insurance (BTW, my health insurance went up from $2500 last year to $3200 this year – fucking bastards… then you get in a bike wreck and you still end up paying the efen bill. I hope they are next in line after the car companies… they can all go to hell as far as i am concerned)… alright, back to the topic.

Bills, and more bills… and no extra income. Thats what i was bitching about. So, I figured that I would need a good freelance job in order to cover my racing this year. I actually had set goals to acquire a bigger account not only for money purposes, but also to learn new things and tackle new challenges.

With that mindset I then started to think about not racing next year at all and really focus on work. I know I need some sort of sporting relief, so I could always go back to rowing or maybe try running or swimming. These things certainly cost less and right now I would be putting that saved money into my own business. Just for the record, with good clients I could turn the $5k into $20k, thats what i have set, I just need the clientele.

So, the outlook for this year. I need to upgrade so I can start to enjoy racing and maybe take a brake with a CAT 2 license in hands. Grow a freelance business that will allow me to spend more time with ME… be it racing, riding or doing my things.

I am sure you have heard the word CHANGE, but for real, this is a year of change.

And in the interest of self advertising, if anyone knows anyone who is looking to build web applications in .NET, please contact me. ;-) And no freebies…. I need to ride….
