Sisquoc and the end….

Posted on August 30, 2009

Went to Sisquoc yesterday and overall it was a great race.

I went in completely unmotivated (not for the race, but for how long the season was going), holding on to a shred of fitness that I had left from the previous training block and with an efed-up mind as far as going hard on a bike was concerned.

Well, to add to all that is was hot. Freaking hot out there and yeah it did hurt, but it killed other guys out there. It was great. I can handle the hear pretty good plus I had a good feed (double feed!!!).

Race started with about 40-50 guys I would say. Lots of Platinum guys and 2 other guys I knew would put the hurt on us. I had never raced here so I wasn’t sure about the terrain. ANY climb hurts me. First lap went OK. I had a teammate go off the front and that allowed me to play “asshole” for a whole lap. So did the Platinum guys…. they were great at playing “a-holes”.

Second lap we caught the group and I went up the road ad my plan was to get to the top of the climb ahead of the group. Like a super fat-man-float. A perfected/extended version of this technique. I did it. I knew this non-sense going hard shit would end very soon. The heat was getting in the way and guys would start hurting too much to do anything.

so I get caught and my teammate went again. Great. Some more “a-hole” role for me. Guys chased and chased and we disrupted everything. I got pushed and shoved and I wasn’t having any of that.

Laps started to tick quickly. I was sitting in good marking moves. TJ and I did what we could to stay and break things up while Nate was up the road. Slowly our group went from 50 or so on the first lap to 48 on the second to 40 on the third to 30 on the fourth and for the beginning of our last lap we were down to 8, plus i think 6 guys up the road. With half a lap to go, TJ rolled away with another platinum guy and I played possum. I had a huge match in me and I wasn’t sure when to use it. I felt bad cause some guys did a lot of work (ethan) for nothing… I man top 10, but I bitched everyone pretty good at the line. I wanted to be absolutely sure the Felt guys would get any placings. It was weird to see teammates chasing each other…. what is the point. did not get that.

So guys, sorry for being an ass, but that day was my day to be an idiot and I think I accomplished it.

I am glad that I had Nate up the road. If he did not go, I am sure I would not have finished that race, that is for sure.

I thought I was golden in the break and I completely overheated – chills and shakes – and bailed. At least my house did not burn! Nate looked great – tell him congrats.
