Racing tactics – Tip 3

- Road Racing Math

This is a very important tip. It is based on the rule of survival, i.e., the amount of time that you could potentially stay with the pack.

The only number you will ever need to know in order to figure this out, is determined by 3 variables that are known before starting the race:
1 – your weight
2 – grade of the climb
3 – lenght of the climb

Variables that are out of your control:
1 – wind conditions
2 – anger level (again)
3 – mountain bikers

So, take me for example. I will decide to participate in a road race if the following conditions are not met:
1 – 7% or more for the grade
2 – 1000ft of climbing for every 10 miles of racing

If any of these occur in a race I will choose not to race. I have figured out that these are my weak links and I most likely will not make it to the end of the race. If you think about them and start analyzing your training against these numbers you will also realize that there is some sort of combination that will make it unviable for you to show up for a certain RR.

Make sure to test yourself and come prepared for the race. Dont show up to a gun fight with a knife.
