Red Trolley

Posted on February 9, 2009

I have been paranoid about racing all week.

The truth is that I am not ready to race yet and I am signing up for these races. I am more paranoid about VOS, so Red Trolley was supposed to be a good opener for next week.

Well, I am not feeling ready, but as soon as the race started I got into the mood and was in the flow of things. Trying to stay upfront and doing my fat man float on the riser. Everything was going good until my efen powertap hub locked up.

What has been happening (I suspect, but almost 100% sure this is the problem) is that my cogs are digging into the hub. I have the SL, so it is a aluminum hub… waaay to soft.

Last two times I cleaned my bike I had to pry the cogs out by forcing them to align to the marks on the hub body, then take them off. Well, I thnk yesterday the dig was just too much and I am thinking that the cassette over-rotated locking the hub. My wheel froze and as i was going up the hill, putting torque on it, the wheel snapped out of my rear drops.

I get into the pit, the ref tells me its a rider error (How am I supposed to argue with minimal facts.. I only figured out what happened AFTER the race). I accept, so now I am 1 lap down. I get back in and tell Mitch that I am down that one lap. Up the riser again I experience the same issue and the wheel locks again and to make matters worse I was riding easy with the pack but pushing 680 watts.

I had to pull out.

Sucks.

    Which hub do you have?

Geoff, I have the wireless powertap.

I “think” I put a steel on. Reason I saw that I think it is steel is because the color is almost the same and I can’t tell the 20-50 grams in weight. I have to ride it, but I am hoping this will fix it.

BTW, nothing against the product… I think I am just a bit too heavy for the aluminum hub body.
