Please explain this to me

Ok, now that Farrar and a handful of riders are out of the Tour of California, I would like to know EXACTLY what a “stomach bug” is?
Is this the nice word for diarrhea or am I missing something here? I am foreign, so this might be normal to most of you guys.
Could it also mean a very powerful flu? Cramps? Heartburn? Or something just ate some stuff that was not properly cooked….
Please enlighten me.
