Fiesta Island – April 24th

Posted on April 26, 2008

Long day at work on the computer so to go outside after an efed up week like this last one was pretty awesome.

I was ready for battle.

Pace started moderate. I mean, after I finally caught on to the group. For the second week in a row I have been late and I can see them leaving when I am making the turn into fiesta. Chased like crazy then the BIG group was just chilling… nice, there goes one match ;-)

Back on track, couple of guys that are always motivated to work are there. The pace start to pick up slowly. I notice that there are people joining the group after the second lap… holy shit! They got dropped on the first lap!

We keep going and it seems that everyone or a core group of guys is really motivated to work. In the tailwind sections we were going 37+ mph on a consistent basis. Strung out and a lot of guys sitting up. I kept closing as few gaps as I could, but still did it 4-5 times. These were the big gaps… tons of smaller ones.

Finally on the 7th lap I got gapped off and was hoping the guy would close it. I have no idea how fast we were going but the pack dropped some serious heat into the stretch and there they went. I mean, by the time I came around the corner they were 200 meters ahead… in about 30 seconds… I gave up, sat up and waited for the last lap.

I see them coming around and its hammer time. I figured I would put one more good effort and that was it.

Into the headwind, pegged at 750w for about 500 meters and I was done.

Looking at the data, this was for sure one of the hardest Fiesta Islands in a looooong time. I was told that Iggy won the sprint… that guy is riding so good.

I heard from a friend that my last pull burried a dozen guys. Apparently there was a huge move on the backside and they were hoping to go slower… I laughed at him…

Good to hear others thought it was real fast! I actually dropped off twice but got back in. Not normal for me but hey… I only had one gear. I am contemplating doing it again this Thursday but upping the gear.

Jan, unplug the watt-o-meter and just ride. I think you are letting that gizmo, rather than your body and intuition, tell you when to stop.

yeah, I know….. but this was the absolute limit at that time….

Numbers are excuses, but they can also work as benchmarks. Without it I would have never known what my limit was, that day, after a couple of faster laps.

This weekend, pre-riding the San Luis course, magically 750 watts was the same number that it took to shake off a pesky rider and crest 1st over highway 395. He put it to me on the first part, but I decided to see how much it would take to loose him…

Question is, can I do that 10 times….. probably not….
