Bakersfield – Part 3

Posted on June 11, 2009

So after stretching things out a bit earlier in the day it was time for the 3′s race. The MAIN EVENT.

Race started pretty nice… people were grabbing their spots in the peloton. I was still spinning my legs out and was feeling better that I did all weekend.

Some smaller attacks when up the road but quickly got reeled in and so it went until the first climb. I saw most of the stronger guys sitting in for the second lap to make their moves.

And we start the first climb and it was OK. You can tell that everyone was ready to go if anything got a little bit out of control. For me the climb was not super hard, but hard enough to make me feel a bit woozy when we crested. I was looking around and we had only lost a couple of guys and most of the riders still looked very fresh.

Second lap come around and my teammate was really nice and actually grabbed a shit load of bottles for all of us. I wish I was that strong… crap. By now we had had a guy of the front for the past 40 minutes or so. We caught him and everyone that made it up the road right before the climb.

I was sitting in the back, chatting with a skinny guys and we were shooting the shit and he is like “yeah, i am gonna go hard on this climb”. I should have gone with him… fawk, the guy lead the first half of the climb and I blew up. I actually blew up so hard that I crested the “hump” after climb at an astonishing 9.3mph.

My legs could not turn but my heart rate was still below 170. I waited for a couple of guys and we caught one more. We worked and worked until it was pointless. The race was over for us. I am not sure where I finished, didn’t matter… all the training went down the drain that weekend. I had some serious issues with my back and legs.

I think that a combination of bad eating, hard effort on tuesday, constipation, not spinning on wednesday and thursday and friday, severe back pain plus racing 3 races absolutely blew any chances of me making the split at the climb. It really sucks.
