Bakersfield – Part 1
Posted on June 7, 2009
I got all excited to go race this weekend…. lots of training in, dieting (not so much actually – at least not the week before… the week that mattered) and positive thoughts.
I tappered and I think I rested too much. Friday at night my lower back was killing me.. to the point where i was walking hunched over…. i get that when my hamstrings get tight… they pull nerves in my back and that is good night jan.
I slept on it and woke up looking forward to riding. I knew that only riding could help me out. Lined up to the 30+ 1/2/3/4 and it was shitty weather. Wet, dirt, crap ad a bunch of guys that were stronger than me. crap.
We get going and there were some attacks.
MY STRATEGY: ride like Levi Leipheimer in the Giro.. sit in until i get dropped
It worked! Right on that freaking hump just after the false flat after the climb I went nuclear. I tried to chase, got together with another dude and we got REALLY close to sealing the deal but after chasing for 9 miles I threw the towel… No more, done.
Gathered my shit and started to ride my own pace. Connected with couple other guys and in our group i was the only one racing sunday.
Coming up the climb I kept looking for the 35+ guys to come and mowe (sp?) me down, but it took them a bit longer to catch me. Once i got into the switchbacks i saw the break, then the big group. My goal was to crest before the break and descend before the group caught me. Perfect timing… Zohan was in the break and that was pretty cool to see… Actually I got to see the most exciting part of that race unfold. The group chasing the break and miscalculating the distance/timing.
I sat in the 35+ group to get home faster and it was really nice.
Overall a pretty lame race for me as I knew I would get killed, but i had to do it.
